Common Extension Installation Mistakes and How to Avoid Them

Hair extension services can be incredibly rewarding, not only for you, the stylist, but your clients as well. But even the most beautiful extensions won’t perform well if the installation isn’t done correctly. Proper technique is key to ensure comfort, longevity, and seamless results.

Below are some of the most common extension installation mistakes we see, and exactly how to avoid them so your installs look and feel flawless every time.

1. Taking Sections That Are Too Large

Oversized sections during your foundation can lead to over-direction, excess friction, and unnecessary tension on the hair.

How to avoid it:

Work with smaller, clean sections and make sure your needle is directed straight down when sewing. This keeps the hair lying naturally and prevents stress on the scalp.

2. Not Properly Securing Corners

Missing the corner of your wefts (or not stitching them securely enough) can cause the weft to loosen prematurely and poke out, making extensions uncomfortable and obvious.

How to avoid it:

Use plenty of clips to isolate every corner of each weft before stitching. If you’re brick-laying extensions where corners overlap, be sure to add extra stitches to fully secure them. A little extra time here goes a long way in preventing future issues.

3. Clamping Beads Too Tight

Over-tightened beads can create unnecessary tension, discomfort, and even damage over time.

How to avoid it:

Push the bead up to the scalp, then slightly release your grip so it settles into its natural fall before clamping. This ensures a secure hold without excessive tension. Trust us, your client will feel the difference immediately.

4. Inaccurately Color Matching

An inaccurate color match can make extensions look obvious and take away from an otherwise great install.

How to avoid it:

Always achieve your client’s desired natural hair color before color matching extensions. Utilize more than one extension color for a more natural blend, and use a color ring to match your clients hair in person for the most accurate match.

5. Improper Blending

Even perfectly installed extensions can look unnatural if they aren’t blended correctly.

How to avoid it:

It’s important to use enough hair to blend with your client’s natural density. Our Stylist Resources page includes a guide to help determine how many packs of hair each client needs.

And don’t be afraid to cut your client’s hair! We know you want to keep as much length as possible, but cutting the extensions is necessary to blend the natural hair with the extensions. It’s better to overestimate the amount of extensions needed so you have more wiggle room when cutting without sacrificing density.

6. Lack of Customization

Hair extensions are not a one-size-fits-all application. Customization is key to creating flawless outcomes while also giving your clients longevity.

How to avoid it:

Key factors such as placement, amount of hair used, number of rows, stitching pattern, and bead size should all be considered and customized for each client. Visit our Stylists Resources page for helpful resources including a bead size “cheat sheet”.

7. Charging Improperly

Improper pricing can hurt both your confidence and your business.

How to avoid it:

Find the balance between valuing your work and staying competitive. Understand your market and your demand! Utilize basic supply and demand principles when forming your pricing. Don’t undercut the market just to get an extension client, and don’t overcharge when your demand is low.

8. Poor Placement

Placing your rows too high or too low can affect comfort, blend, and longevity.

How to avoid it:

Follow the 2-finger rule: Two fingers above the ear, and two fingers away from the hairline. Space your rows evenly to maintain a balanced, comfortable, and natural-looking result. Invest in proper education to learn all aspects of proper installation. Mastering extensions is more than just learning how to place the beads and sew in the hair.
