How to Mentally and Physically Prepare for the Holiday Rush

The holiday season is officially here, which means salons are busy, your books are packed, and the energy is high. It’s exciting… and also a little chaotic. Between managing clients, squeezing in last-minute appointments, and trying to maintain your own holiday spirit, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed.

That’s why taking extra time to care for yourself is the key to surviving (and actually enjoying!) the holiday season. Here are a few ways to mentally and physically prepare for the holiday rush to avoid unnecessary stress during the busiest time of the year.

Prioritizing Your Physical Well-Being

Move Your Body

As hairstylists, we know you’re on your feet all day, but intentional movement hits differently. Even just 20 minutes of light exercise can boost your mood and help with stress management. Find a workout you genuinely enjoy, whether that’s walking your dog, taking a Pilates class with a friend, or doing an at-home yoga workout. A few short workouts each week can leave you feeling more grounded and energized–something every stylist needs during the December madness!

Get Organized

Holiday chaos isn’t just about a full book of appointments! There are gifts to buy, money to track, and schedules to juggle. Get ahead of the stress and take a little time to organize your schedule and finances. Set firm availability, track your spending, and plan out your busy weeks. When you know exactly where your time and money are going, you instantly feel lighter! Consider this your seasonal reminder that you are in control of your calendar, even when it may not feel like it.

Supporting Your Mental Health

While taking care of your physical health is important, caring for your mind is equally important, especially when holiday chaos hits. Here are some ways to support your mental health.

Protect Your Peace Outside the Salon

You’re giving energy all day long, so don’t forget to refill your own cup. Make an effort to clock out mentally when you’re off. Do things that help you decompress, whether that’s listening to your favorite playlist, watching a comfort show, taking a bubble bath, meditating, etc. Make rest an intentional part of your week so you can show up refreshed instead of running on fumes.

Shift Your Mindset

Yes, the holidays are hectic, but a full book also means loyal clients and a season of abundance. Lean into gratitude, and give yourself moments to look forward to! Make small plans to sprinkle into your routine, such as a weekly coffee-and-pastry date or a happy hour with friends. Little moments of joy can make even the busiest weeks feel manageable. When life starts to feel overwhelming, it’s important to look forward to the small things!

Put Yourself First

Fill your books with people who fill your cup! Don’t overbook beyond what you can realistically handle. Say no to clients who drain your energy, and prioritize clients and services that make you excited to show up. Protecting your time and emotional bandwidth isn’t selfish; it’s what keeps you performing at your best.

Wrapping Up the Holiday Prep

The holiday rush is wild, but with a little preparation, it doesn’t have to be draining. Move your body, organize your world, take care of your mind, celebrate the small things, and honor your boundaries.

You deserve a joyful, profitable, and peaceful holiday season – both behind the chair and outside the salon.
