Hard Water Wellness

Did you know that 85% of households in the U.S. have hard water? And most don’t even know it! This means your sinks and showers have been pushing out hard water onto your hair and skin when a filter is not used. If you have experienced dry, brittle or discolored hair, hard water could be the issue. Let's break down what hard water is, how it may affect you, and what you can do to fix it.

What is hard water?

You may hear a lot of talk about hard water and may even be wondering what it is. Hard water is water with a high mineral content, usually containing calcium, magnesium, sulfates, and other heavy metals. This can appear anywhere in your home, from the showers to the sinks. If you have ever noticed dryness after washing your hair, or a feeling that it is brittle, or even that the color is fading quickly, you may have had water in your home. Even a white, chalky buildup on shower heads, faucets and shower walls can be indicative of hard water.

Why does it affect me?

Now that we have explained what hard water is, you need to know how it is affecting your hair! The harsh metals and sulfates in hard water can cause buildup on your hair, leaving it dry and brittle, which causes breakage. This is especially damaging to hair extensions as your extensions do not have a natural source of healthy oils and moisture to keep them intact, which in turn lowers the longevity of your investment. Along with this, hard water can leave your color fading quicker and make it harder for your hair to take color or lighten. Also, your scalp can suffer irritation, which can be uncomfortable and in extreme cases cause hair loss.

What can I do?

Luckily, there are easy fixes for hard water in your shower and remedies to save your hair if you have been struggling with hard water. First and most importantly, a SHOWER FILTER is a necessity for washing your hair. A shower filter will filter out the heavy metals and sulfates, leaving your hair feeling hydrated and healthy after your wash day! Now, some things to rescue your hard water-damaged hair — we recommend a clarifying shampoo to clear out all the buildup from your hair. Follow this with a weekly hydrating mask so your extensions and natural hair can soak up all the moisture to keep their longevity and health. Another great tool is a Malibu CPR treatment, and as always, make sure you are using sulfate-free hair products! Adding a shower filter and weekly mask can save your hair in the long run and give you peace of mind regarding its health!
