The secret to a flawless hair extension install starts before the install itself. It starts with choosing the right length and weight for your client's unique hair. Every client has different goals, hair density, and proportions, so taking the time to customize your install makes all the difference!
Choosing the Right Length
When deciding on extension length, don't just ask your client how long they want their hair - take into consideration their height too! 18" extensions will look much longer on someone who's 5'0" than it will on someone who's 5'8".
You also want to consider the haircut you'll create. For example, layers can remove the illusion of length. If you're planning on adding layers, choose a slightly longer length to give you the flexibility to customize the cut without sacrificing the final length!
Choosing the Right Weight
Extension weight is just as important as length. The goal is to match your client's natural hair density while keeping the install comfortable and healthy.
For clients with thin or fine hair, more isn't always better. They likely won't need 200 grams of hair, and adding too much weight can put unnecessary stress on their natural hair. Excess weight can lead to scalp irritation, tension, easier tangling, and can make the extensions harder to maintain.
On the other hand, clients with naturally thick hair or blunt haircuts typically need more grams to create a seamless blend. Using too little hair can leave the extensions looking stringy and unnatural compared to the client's natural density.
If you're ever unsure about how much hair to use, check out our install guide to help determine the right amount for every client!
Every Client is Different
No two extension installs will be exactly the same. Every client has different hair goals, natural density, height, and lifestyle. Taking all of these factors into account allows you to create an install that's comfortable, balanced, and long-lasting. A personalized install leads to happier clients, better blends, and dream hair they'll love every time!
