How to Cut and Blend Hair Extensions Like a Pro: Step-by-Step Guide

You’ve just finished your install and your client is so excited to see the final result! But before she’s ready to leave the salon, it’s important to blend her new extensions with her natural hair. A great blend is what makes extensions look seamless, natural, and undetectable. Whether you're working with wefts, k-tips, or tape-ins, here’s our tips on cutting and blending extensions like a pro to create a flawless finish every time!

Before the Install

Before you even install the extensions, go in and add texture and layers to your client’s natural hair. It’s especially important to take out weight in the natural hair when it’s really blunt, heavy, or thick. Pre-cut the natural hair using texturizing shears, a razor, or slide cutting, depending on how thick the hair is. This will make blending after the install easier for you!

After the Install

The Perimeter: After you install the extensions, start with the perimeter. Remove any stringy pieces, and blunt up the perimeter where needed. Fuller, healthier-looking ends create a more polished and natural result.

Remove Weight and Create Movement: Take pie-shaped sections, grabbing both the natural hair and the extensions together. Pick up any heavy spots and use a slide-cutting technique to create better movement. Don't be afraid to remove too much weight! We know you just added all this beautiful hair and you don’t want to cut it off, but this is what creates a more natural look!

Blend the Layers: Start your layers just below your client’s natural hair that sits on top of the extensions. Connect the shortest natural length into the extensions, focusing on the mid-lengths and ends. The goal is to create soft texture that allows the natural hair to transition effortlessly into the added length and density.

Add Face-Framing: Last, add some face-framing! Create shape around the face by directing the hair forward, making sure to cut the extensions only. Let the client’s natural hair drop out, then slide-cut to create the framing. Adding texture and movement throughout the face will give the overall look a more natural flow.
