If you’ve always dreamed of longer, thicker hair, hair extensions can make that dream come true! And if you’re a hairstylist excited to book your first extension client, you’re in the right place too! Hair extensions are a great way for clients to transform their look and boost their confidence, while also giving stylists an opportunity to grow their clientele and increase their income behind the chair. But for both clients and stylists, proper preparation is key to ensuring a smooth, successful first appointment. Whether you're preparing to get extensions for the first time or you're a stylist preparing for your first install, here’s what you need to know!
Extensions 101: Tips for Clients!
Arrive to your appointment with clean, fully dry hair that is ideally blow-dried straight. This gives your stylist a blank canvas to work with and helps ensure a flawless install. When you arrive with dirty hair, your stylist may need to wash and blow-dry it before starting the install. This can delay the appointment, setting back your stylist’s schedule, and might result in an additional charge for a blowout.
Hair extensions require the right products to maintain their quality and longevity, so make sure you have the right products at home! A hydrating sulfate-free shampoo & conditioner and hair oil are the minimum products we recommend. If you don’t already have these products at home, be prepared to purchase professional recommendations from your stylist after your appointment. It’s also helpful to have a few extension-friendly home-care items, such as a silk pillowcase and a shower filter. Both help keep your hair (and skin!) soft, healthy, and free from excess build-up.
The first night after your extension install, it’s totally normal for your scalp to feel a little tender or achy. Don’t worry, this is totally normal—your head just isn’t used to carrying the extra weight yet! The discomfort will subside by the next day, and you’ll get used to it quickly. Before you know it, your extensions will feel natural! If that tenderness crosses over to pain, or lasts longer than 24-48 hours, contact your stylist right away!
Extensions 101: Tips for Stylists!
If your extension certification course includes lifetime access to digital education (like ours does!), take advantage! Rewatch the videos to brush up on your skills and refresh your technique. Practice as much as you can on a doll head until you feel comfortable with your placement and technique. And have notes nearby that you can easily reference during your appointment. The more practice you get, the more confident you’ll feel behind the chair during your first install!
Before your client arrives, make sure you have all your tools set up neatly and ready to go, including your extension tray, tool kit, beads & thread, and the hair. Color match your client’s hair and order their extensions ahead of time, so you don’t even have to think about it on the install day. Give yourself extra time for your first few install appointments so you don’t feel rushed. Remember: precision over speed!
Extension installs can be long appointments, so don’t forget to prepare yourself as well! Eat a nourishing meal before and drink lots of water to sustain your energy. Your energy and focus matter just as much as your technical skills!
Finally, make the most of your first extension installation by using it as a learning and content opportunity. Working with a model for your first install can be a great way to ease some of the pressure while you build confidence. Offering a discount in exchange for them being your model helps create a more relaxed environment for both of you. It’s also a smart idea to ask your model to bring a few different tops to change into so you can get multiple photos and videos, giving the illusion that each were taken on a different day and giving you plenty of content to share!
Why Preparation Matters
Hair extensions can be a time investment for both a stylist and a client, but the results are so rewarding! With the right preparation, education, and expectations, your first extension appointment can be a smooth and successful experience. When both the client and stylist understand the installation process, proper aftercare, and maintenance, extensions not only look gorgeous, but they last longer and stay healthier, too. A little preparation goes a long way in creating beautiful, healthy results behind the chair!
